This one act play, based on the book “Let’s Talk Lymphedema” by Professor Peter Mortimer and Gemma Levine, featured as a key part of the Global Celebration of Lymphedema Day, an online event hosted by Kathy Bates, Spokesperson for the Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN). This premiere performance was directed by Mark Armstrong and featured Steve Guttenburg in a key role.
LE&RN President & CEO William Repicci said that in the power of theatre to bring the community together for a World Lymphedema Day that comes at a challenging time for the world and for the global lymphedema community.
“Having spent a good deal of my life as a theatrical producer, I was inspired by how the arts offer a rich medium where we are asked to walk in the shoes of others,” said Mr. Repicci. “In his new play, Brian Daniels flings open the door of the life-changing disease of lymphedema that society has conspired to ignore.”
Sometimes, but not always, an after effect of breast cancer, this debilitating condition sees the swelling of limbs and bodies which can only be treated by specialist massage and special garments. It can affect children and others of all ages - men and women – with the patient sometimes feeling that they look grotesque and have to cope with many negative comments
‘Let’s talk Lymphoedema’ serves as another compelling window into a world too often overlooked by the majority of people, highlighting and underlining an important issue which is affects so many people so powerfully.
